What license does handyman need to have?
Due to the nature of their job, handymen are not required to obtain any licences or certification training. Their jobs are mostly focused on odd jobs, and general home maintenance and repair.

But in New South Wales(NSW), there is an exemption to the rule. A handyman will be required to obtain a licence for Building work valued more than $5000 (inc. GST). Also, the specialised licence is required for jobs that include air conditioning and refrigeration, electrical wiring, gas-fitting, plumbing, reconnection and disconnection of fixed electrical equipment work.

Victoria is a little more generous than most other states, with the limit of each job being $10,000 before a license is required.

What insurance do handymen need to have?
The short answer is "Yes". It's important to ensure that the handyman you are hiring has Public Liability Insurance. Handymen face similar risks to other tradies which makes insurance a must-have.
